“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another” (Galatians 5:25-26).
I’ve said this before, but my friend Dave Howeth reminded me more than once to “go at the speed of God.” Don’t get ahead of Him and run too fast in arrogance, but don’t lag behind Him in reluctance.
The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-33) is a great guardrail for going at the speed God wants you to move, to “live by the Spirit [and] keep in step with the Spirit.” Otherwise, it becomes all about us.
Let us *not* become:
Conceited: “What a great idea I had--congratulate me!”
Provoking one another: “What a silly idea you had -- let’s ridicule you!”
Envying one another: “I can’t believe they are listening to His idea--I want that!”
By not living by the Spirit, you won’t keep in step with the Spirit; you won’t go at the speed of God--rather, you will only pay attention to those around you and how they respond to you.
Dave, thanks for the reminder. Lord, please help me keep in step with Your Spirit.
