The Gist: Teenage Fanclub on quaaludes
In the midst of 2026’s great power pop explosion, this Oakland quartet’s take on guitar rock is less brightly-lit jangle and more lightly-sunkissed lushness. It’s an approach that suits the bummer-in-the-summer vibe of their tunes, which sit comfortably at the sonic intersection of broody alt-rock and cottony dream pop (with a penchant for some well-placed, gleamy synth lines here and there). Though not untrodden territory, there’s a studied lightness to Twin Bloom’s sound that makes it feel fresh, the rough edges smoothed without being polished off completely. The passage of time is the band’s chief preoccupation on their self-titled debut EP, and each song empathetically traces the line between happiness and sadness inherent to nostalgia, the idea of the past as something that doesn’t slip away in one moment but lingers like the sun on the last warm day of the year. Co-production from Maryam Qudus (Spacemoth, La Luz) adds analog warmth and roundness to a confident debut that feels fully formed upon delivery.
