Name: Slippers
From: Los Angeles, CA
RIYL: Apples in Stereo, Jeanines, Aislers Set, Anna Burch
The Gist: Of-the-moment indie pop with a lo-fi twist.
Whenever Olympia, Washington indie label perennialdeath (home to Sharp Pins) signs a new artist, it’s generally a good idea to lend them your ears. That’s particularly true in the case of Slippers, the brainchild of one Madeline Babuka Black: a singer, guitarist, drummer, and songwriter who got her start playing in Brooklyn garage band Yucky Duster (RIP) before relocating to Los Angeles, where she started this charismatic indie pop project. California’s tradition of feel-good, no-fuss guitar rock is alive and well in her sound, with bright, warm vocal hooks and featherlight chords aplenty; the melodies’ clean construction and lo-fi production, by contrast, contribute to a scrappy, scuzzy presentation that’s bound to resonate with fans of college rock and grunge. Whether you like your guitar music sweet or sour, Slippers 08 is a sure fit.
Slippers 08 is out June 5th on perennialdeath / K Records. Pre-order it.
When it comes to Slippers soundalikes, let’s just say you’ve got plenty of options. Further intel on the ongoing influx of dope, catchy bands we’ve been experiencing as of late can be found in Hayden Merrick’s chronicle of Indie Pop’s Big Year Out; for a more localized perspective informed by BB’s L.A. roots, be sure to peep our California dream pop guide. Then again, why limit yourself to the contemporary era when there are so many indie pop deep cuts ripe for the picking? No need to limit your options, folks….
