It doesn’t disappear suddenly.

There’s no single moment where you decide to stop hoping, no clear point where everything shifts from possible to impossible.

It just gets smaller.

Each time something doesn’t work out the way you expected, it adjusts. Not dramatically just enough to lower what you anticipate next time. You tell yourself you’re being realistic, that it’s better not to expect too much.

So, you expect a little less.

Then a little less again.

And over time, what you once believed could happen starts to feel unlikely, then distant, then not worth considering at all.

You don’t notice it happening in real time.

Because nothing about it feels extreme.

You’re still moving forward. Still doing what you’re supposed to do. Still functioning in a way that looks normal from the outside.

But internally, the tone changes.

There’s less anticipation.
Less belief that things will improve in a meaningful way.
Less willingness to imagine outcomes that go beyond what you’ve already experienced.

Hope doesn’t vanish.

It narrows.

It stays within safer limits, avoiding disappointment by not reaching too far. And in doing that, it protects you but also restricts you.

Because the less you allow yourself to expect, the less you prepare for anything beyond that range.

And eventually, it settles into something quieter.

Not despair. Not giving up.

Just a reduced version of what you once believed was possible shaped not by one moment, but by how many times things didn’t turn out the way you hoped they would.
