Bad Bug's Pop Picks For April

Hey there, all you beautiful Bad Bugs! Are you ready for some Pop Picks? Then let’s dive right in!

A quick first glance at that movie poster leaves you thinking that this may just be some silly teen romance. And, while it DOES delve into some tropes of that tried-and-true formula, it asks the important question: If surging hormones and terminal awkwardness aren’t enough roadblocks to happiness…what if everyone around you randomly started exploding?

For a movie whose premise seems like something that could easily have been a throwaway gag, the story has entirely more heart and style than you’d expect. This could be because the main duo of Mara (Katherine Langford - Cursed, 13 Reasons Why, Knives Out) and Dylan (Charlie Plummer - Looking For Alaska, The Long Walk) have an effortless chemistry, making their love story feel completely real. For a story involving exploding teens, of course.

Overall, this movie was fun on a bun, with a touch of heartbreak. Again, folks get all ‘splodey. But well worth your time, either way.

Following up on our weird romance theme, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a recent Netflix horror mystery mini-series that centers on the week leading up to the wedding of Rachel (Camila Morrone - Marmalade, Daisy Jones & the Six) and Nicky (Adam DiMarco - White Lotus, The Magicians). The couple travels to spend the week with Nicky’s family - the first time that the bride has actually MET any of said family - and things go…let’s just go with “not well”.

Each installment of this eight-episode mini dives a little deeper into cuckoo-bananapants territory, in the most delightful of ways. As long as you have a warped sense of humor firmly in place, of course. I’d recommend going in without researching the plot too much. We went in blind and were pleasantly shocked in all the right ways.

What we CAN tell you is that the cast was fantastic, with special nods to the father and mother of the groom - played by Ted Levine (who played Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs) and the wonderful Jennifer Jason Leigh, who has been doing amazing work in recent years as part of TV shows High Potential, Fargo and Hunters.

And while the ending of the mini certainly doesn’t NEED a sequel, we definitely wouldn’t be mad if they announced one somewhere down the line…
