my birthday is coming up this month, and i’ve been thinking a lot about the sadness birthdays can sometimes bring.
birthdays have a way of turning an ordinary life into an annual performance review. for most of the year, age moves in the background, days pass without asking for a verdict. then a birthday arrives and suddenly everything feels measurable. the person you thought you would be by now appears beside the person you actually are, and the comparison is hardly fair. old expectations return with excellent timing when relationships are counted, careers are assessed and the bodies are inspected. the day begins to feel less like a celebration and more like being summoned into a meeting with every version of yourself who had a five-year plan.
this is part of why birthday sadness can feel so confusing. the occasion is supposed to be happy, which makes any other emotion seem ungrateful. people send kind messages, cake appears and someone makes an effort. meanwhile, a heaviness settles in that has very little to do with whether the day is going well. gratitude and sadness can occupy the same room, although birthdays often make people believe only one of them is allowed to speak.
