surprisingly, losing your spark can look as normal as a regular life, where you can be moving along quite efficiently while everything inside your life feels slightly beige. this is when work gets finished, dinner is made and people asking how things are going receive a perfectly convincing “good,” yet the part of you that normally gets excited about a new book, makes unnecessary plans or suddenly wants to rearrange a room seems to have gone missing. even fun begins to require administration.

the temptation at this point is to fix yourself. a new routine appears sensible. more sleep must surely help. perhaps the answer is deleting instagram, joining pilates or buying a paper republic journal enough to make having thoughts feel important again. sometimes those things are useful, although i have found that feeling flat is never solved by becoming more disciplined about the same life that made me feel flat in the first place.

when i notice myself becoming like this, i work through small resets as a gateway to finding out where my interests went.

they can look almost identical. both make invitations feel tiring and make the sofa unusually persuasive. both can turn a perfectly nice saturday into six hours of scrolling followed by the peculiar disappointment of having neither rested nor done anything.

the difference appears when something genuinely interesting happens. if an unexpected conversation, a bookshop visit or a new idea suddenly gives you energy that seemed unavailable ten minutes earlier, some of the problem may be under-stimulation rather than exhaustion. if even the things you normally love feel like obligations, recovery probably needs to come first.

for three days, keep a tiny note on your phone or paper with two headings: things that drain me and things that wake me up. do not put what should energise you. record what actually does. this catches the difference between wanting more rest and wanting more life.
