there are periods when the smallest requirements of being alive begin to feel unreasonable. an email requiring three sentences sits unanswered for four days. making dinner feels like an undertaking. booking an appointment requires a level of psychological preparation normally associated with international diplomacy. the laundry itself is manageable, yet the sequence of noticing it, sorting it, washing it and remembering that wet clothes cannot remain in a machine indefinitely somehow feels like one demand too many.

the usual explanation is that life has become too busy, which can be true. sometimes the schedule genuinely needs to lose things. but overwhelm has another dimension that is easier to miss: the size of a life and the amount of life a person can comfortably hold are not fixed quantities. two weeks containing roughly the same responsibilities can feel completely different depending on how much attention is already occupied before either one begins.
