What Have You Been Calling Yourself?

Some names were never yours to keep.

Dear Loved One,

God could have named the animals Himself.

He created every creature. He had full authority over what each one would be called. But when it was time to name them, He did something unexpected.

He brought every living thing to Adam and waited. “Whatever you call it, that is its name”.

Not a suggestion. Not a draft for God to review. A declaration that stood.

Scientists understand this principle: a species isn’t recognised until it has a name. Naming is not labelling. It is defining.

And we do this to ourselves every day, mostly without noticing.

“I’m bad with deadlines”. Said in a meeting once, laughed off, repeated until believed.

“I always overthink”. True once, rehearsed until it became a personality.

“I’m not the kind of person who finishes things”. A story borrowed from one bad season, carried into every season after.

This is what Proverbs 18:21 means when it says “death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

Most of us apply that verse to what we say to other people. But the tongue that does the most damage, and the most good, is the one running inside your head, narrating you to yourself.

After a while, the statements we rehearse become the script our behaviour follows. They stop feeling like something we chose. They start to feel like something we are.

Because what you repeatedly tell yourself doesn’t just describe your reality... It writes it.

Have a great week!

Shalom,

Ayo Daniels
