The Fosbury Flop

Until 1968, the world of high jumping was settled.

Every athlete in the world used the same technique: the “straddle” or the “Western Roll.” You ran toward the bar and jumped over it face-forward. That was the only way to do it. It was what coaches taught, what physics books supported, and what every gold medalist had ever done.

Then came Dick Fosbury.

Fosbury wasn’t a world-class athlete. In fact, he was mediocre. He tried the standard way, and he failed. He simply wasn’t fast enough or strong enough to compete using the straddle.

So he decided to do something that looked absolutely ridiculous.

At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, instead of jumping face-forward, he turned his back to the bar and flopped over it head-first.

The crowd laughed. The commentators called it “eccentric.” Coaches told him he was going to break his neck.

But as the bar kept rising, the straddle jumpers started hitting it and falling.

Fosbury didn’t.

He won the Gold Medal. He broke the Olympic record.

Within a decade, the “standard” way was dead. Today, every single high jumper in the world uses the Fosbury Flop.

What was once a glitch became the blueprint.

This isn’t new.

When David faced Goliath, King Saul tried to give him armour and a sword. The “standard” warrior approach. The way every soldier fought.

But David took it off. He said, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” (1 Samuel 17:39)

Instead, he picked up five smooth stones and a sling.

The Israelite army thought he was insane. Goliath mocked him. But the giant fell.

David didn’t try to be a better armoured soldier. He knew he’d lose that fight. So he changed the game entirely.

The crowd laughed at the shepherd boy until they saw the giant on the ground.

Don’t mistake tradition for truth. Most “standard procedures” are just old habits waiting for a better blueprint.

Trust the pivot.
