Below is the recap of chapter 2 of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire.

For those of you who don’t know, this book club began to take shape in 2024 after I began reading A People’s History of the United States. The series ended up going viral and inspired thousands of people to read/learn with me. I’ve always loved to read, but doing it alongside so many other people was (and is) really inspiring.

It was great to have the opportunity to assist others in interpreting text and taking in additional context shared in the comments/DMs. Soon after the series went live, lots of people (who were upset by what I was reading) began mass reporting the page and it was on the verge of being removed. That is what ultimately inspired me to create this Substack. I wanted people who were committed to learning to feel like this movement wasn’t going to stop—I of course also continued to feel like this was a community I wanted to remain connected to.

Fast forwarding to today and I have decided that I’m going to approach sharing the videos for this book similarly to how I share A People’s History of the United States. Each chapter of Pedagogy of the Oppressed will have a series of 10-minute videos that folks can keep up with on our TikTok page.

Those who are part of our book club’s sustaining tier will have access to 1 video full length video. This will make it much more convenient to listen/watch while you work, run errands, etc.
