Inaugural IRL event recap

Miami, wow. You blew me away.

Our time together on Sunday was deeply enriching.

Despite the rain, y’all pulled up! Our discussion was 90 minutes, but we could’ve easily gone on for hours.

Together we:

  • Paid homage to Walter Rodney’s legacy

  • Unpacked the reality of the old world that is crumbling

  • Imagined the new world that is emerging

  • Reflected on what it means to exist in the “center” and the “periphery”

  • Openly contemplated on what roles we are meant to embrace as we help usher in the reality that Walter Rodney, Frantz Fanon, Malcolm X, and so many others struggled to help make more possible.

This experience was one for the books (no pun intended), and is also just the beginning for what is to come for our community in 2026. The intention behind this gathering was for us to not only learn together, but to commune and be reminded that there are people who care; in a way that can only be felt IRL.

I hope that you left this gathering feeling motivated to be the change our world needs, and of course, the love that exists all around us. 🫂

I’m cooking up some cool gatherings in May, so keep a lookout for updates in your inbox.

In the meantime, begin reading our next book selection The Black Jacobins and tap into the chapter recap videos posted bi-weekly here, on substack!

Thanks again to Roots Bookstore and Market for hosting us, Tended Brw for the hand poured coffee, and Azooma Vine and Verse for nourishing our bellies.

Take care,
Cat, Founder of Awake Book Club
