He came to protect a witness. She came to teach survival skills. Now they're targets with an enemy who won't let either of them walk away. Survival expert Elena Thompson teaches wilderness skills at the ranch and coaches Ollie in self-defense. As the series of attacks on the ranch escalates into a full siege, the question becomes who the attackers are after: Ollie, the young witness? Or Elena, with her mysterious past? With communications down and help out of reach, Sully and Elena fight to keep everyone alive as secrets and danger close in.
FBI agent Sully Sullivan arrives at Broken Chains Ranch with Ollie Callahan--a foster teen and sole witness to a mob hit. The ranch, started by Sully's cousin to provide a trauma recovery facility for veterans, should be a place he can keep Ollie safe until the trial. But what was meant as a peaceful haven becomes a battleground when armed attackers surround the property.
ARCF: What first sparked the idea for Twilight Tactics, and what made this story stand out as one you had to write?
LE: Honestly, this story was a result of brainstorming with other writer friends. As I plotted and developed the characters, I just fell in love with the story and knew I wanted to write it.
ARCF: The title Twilight Tactics sounds intense—how does it capture the heart of the story?
LE: Well, the story takes place at Broken Chains ranch which is a rather isolated veteran healing sanctuary in Tennessee where residents’ dangerous pasts keep finding them. In Twilight Tactics, I think the title is accurate because much of the most dangerous action in the book takes place in the dark. When the ranch is under siege, the heroes use the cover of darkness and night vision goggles to invisibly patrol the perimeter and disarm explosives without alerting the enemy. Elena, the heroine, uses a tunnel to attempt and escape from enemies, and so on. There’s more, of course, but I can’t give away the whole story, right? So, I think it’s a great title for the book.
ARCF: What kind of danger or high-stakes situation do your characters face in Twilight Tactics?
LE: Too much to list! LOL! But let me give it a shot.
· The danger kicks off with a deadly high-speed car chase
· Broken Chains Ranch is attacked in a highly coordinated, high-tech tactical assault.
· A sniper pins down ranch hands in the woods
· Remote-controlled explosive devices are planted
· Then there’s the whole psychological “torture” that’s involved in a few scenes.
How’s that?
ARCF: Which character in Twilight Tactics surprised you the most while writing?
LE: The villain. It wasn’t who I expected it/planned for it to be! That was rather shocking. LOL!
ARCF: Your books are known for gripping suspense—what was the most adrenaline-filled scene for you to write in Twilight Tactics?
LE: I loved the ending scenes where Elena is trapped in the compound and trying to figure out how to escape. It was a twisty, windy ending to the story and I loved it!
ARCF: Did you do any special research to bring the tactical or suspense elements of Twilight Tactics to life?
LE: Absolutely! I had to do all kinds of research on prepper communities, organized crime, witness protection and so on.
ARCF: If readers had to choose one word to describe the experience of reading Twilight Tactics, what would you hope it would be?
LE: Riveting! {exclamation mark included!}
ARCF: Which character from Twilight Tactics would you trust the most in a dangerous situation—and why?
LE: I’d trust Sully, the main hero. He’s the most determined protector I think I’ve ever written.
ARCF: What part of writing Twilight Tactics was the most challenging?
LE: Designing the ranch! You wouldn’t believe what a headache that was. LOL. I tried to hand draw the map, then I tried to get AI to understand what I wanted (it didn’t) and then I finally resorted to leaving it up to my editor to make sure all of my directions (I’m very directionally challenged!) made sense. Hopefully, readers aren’t quite as challenged as I am when it comes to directions.
ARCF: What emotions do you hope readers feel as they race through the pages of Twilight Tactics?
LE: Fear, edge of their seat, adrenaline racing with sweaty palms, and I hope they fall in love with the characters just like I did.
ARCF: And finally, what is coming up next?
LE: Next up is Missing Asset, book 2 in the series. It releases in January 2027 and I can’t wait for readers to meet Felicity and Leo.
