Electric airplanes are not exactly breaking news anymore, but those that are currently (pun intended) in operation are tiny hobby aircraft with very small capacities. However, a New York company decided that if something can be made small, it can also be made grand. After all, it was the humble glider of Wilbur and Orville Wright who laid the path to the jumbo jet.

As the sun crested over the waters of Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, aviation history was quietly—very quietly—made. Heart Aerospace’s X1 demonstrator aircraft lined up on Runway 35 at Plattsburgh International Airport, accelerated, and lifted into the upstate New York sky. With that 27-minute piloted mission, the X1 officially became the largest fully battery-electric aircraft ever to achieve flight.

This is not a light, single-engine hobbyist plane. The Heart X1 is a commercial-scale behemoth that proves electric passenger aviation is rapidly moving from a distant sci-fi dream to a solid reality.

To understand the magnitude of this milestone, one must look at the X1’s sheer scale. The aircraft boasts a wingspan of 106 feet (32.3 meters)—comparable to a traditional Boeing 737—and measures 76 feet (23.2 meters) from its nose to its towering 24-foot T-tail. Weighing in at over 25,000 pounds (11,340 kilograms) at takeoff, it shatters previous limits for battery-powered flight.

The X1 is propelled entirely by a 100% battery-electric system that drives four wing-mounted electric motors and their respective propellers. During its inaugural flight, the powertrain delivered more than one megawatt of peak power. Flown by a single pilot, the demonstrator reached an altitude of 1,100 feet above ground level, maneuvering gracefully over the Adirondack woodlands.

While operating within a carefully controlled envelope for this initial test, the aircraft is designed for a maximum speed (VNE) of 140 knots (259 km/h) and a maximum altitude of 2,000 feet above ground level (AGL).

Perhaps the most staggering metric from the historic flight, however, is the energy bill. Powered entirely by its advanced battery packs, the 27-minute journey consumed approximately $5 worth of electricity. For comparison, a conventional regional turboprop aircraft of similar size and megawatt-class power output burns roughly 50 to 60 gallons of aviation fuel during a 27-minute flight profile of taxiing, takeoff, climb, and landing.

With global jet fuel prices averaging $3.50 per gallon that same week—a 63% year-over-year increase—a conventional aircraft would have cost approximately $175 to $210 in fuel for the exact same trip. This stark contrast highlights the disruptive potential of electric propulsion – albeit taken only at face value, not considering the hypothetical generation sources for a large-scale electric flight infrastructure.

Heart Aerospace foresees an industry completely decoupled from the volatility of global oil markets, projecting structurally lower operating costs that will fundamentally reset the economics of flying.

As impressive as the X1 is, it is only a stepping stone. The aircraft was purpose-built as a full-scale technology demonstrator to validate the aerodynamics, systems integration, and clean-sheet design principles of Heart Aerospace’s true objective: a fully operational commercial aircraft, the upcoming ES-30.

The ES-30 is a conventional fixed-wing, hybrid-electric regional airliner slated for FAA type certification and entry into commercial service by 2031. Drawing directly from the technological foundation established by the X1, the production ES-30 will be capable of carrying 30 passengers, along with an allowance of 55 lb (25 kg) of luggage per person.

While the X1 relies purely on batteries, the ES-30 will employ a highly efficient hybrid-electric architecture. It promises an all-electric, zero-emission range of 125 miles (200 kilometers)—ideal for short regional hops—and an extended hybrid range of 500 miles (800 kilometers) to accommodate longer routes and standard reserve requirements. Furthermore, turnaround times will rival traditional aircraft, with battery packs engineered to fully recharge in just 30 minutes between flights.

Heart Aerospace is already building the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing facility in Los Angeles, with flight testing scheduled to commence in 2028. The company has secured $9.4 billion in customer commitments from major carriers like United Airlines and Air Canada, who are eager to embrace electric aviation to lower costs and emissions by an estimated 40% compared to legacy regional planes.

“With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner,” stated Anders Forslund, Founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace. As the X1 touched down silently on the Plattsburgh runway, it didn't just conclude a successful test—it proved the electric age of commercial aviation is no longer a theoretical fad, but a very reachable reality.
