BMW of North America has formally recalled a bunch of rear-biased vehicles in the United States market, with the campaign targeting select high-performance and executive models from the 2021 through 2026 model years. Encompassing the 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series, the field safety action centers around premature wear at the interface connecting the driveshaft and rear differential.
As per the report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the connection is susceptible to excessive wear over extended vehicle operation. BMW claims that interface degradation may compromise drive torque transfer. In extreme instances, a complete failure would result in an abrupt loss of power to the rear wheels, increasing the risk of a crash.
Should mechanical disengagement between the driveshaft and differential occur while the vehicle is parked without the electronic parking brake applied, the vehicle could roll away. The recall covers 2021 through 2023 model year 5 Series vehicles, namely the 540i, 540i xDrive, and the M550i xDrive.
Encompassing a little under 2,200 plug-in hybrids produced for model years 2024 through 2026, the 750e xDrive population is joined by quite a few more 840i and 840i xDrive vehicles. The coupe, convertible, and sedan models are listed with 7,372 potentially affected units in the recall documentation.
Despite the broad scope, BMW estimates that only 0.2 percent of suspect vehicles actually harbor the condition. Most crucially, the German automaker is aware of precisely zero accidents connected to this failure mode.
The recall caps off a multi-phase investigation that originated in December 2024, after BMW safety boffins noticed an increasing number of incidents from the field. By the first quarter of 2025, the company established a parts return initiative targeting high-mileage customer vehicles to inspect the driveshaft-differential interface.
Through the third quarter of 2025, engineers used computer simulations to analyze surface contact pressure at the interface. Concurrently, the manufacturer analyzed enterprise-wide metrics to identify anomalies. Bench tests were also performed, replicating operational stresses. And finally, BMW also conducted metallurgical evaluations.
The investigation stretched into the second quarter of 2026 as engineers performed Multi-Body Simulation calculations to assess bending angles across various rear axle configurations and driveshaft mounting positions. In conclusion, BMW instructed service technicians to inspect the interface at no charge to affected owners and lessees.
If no critical wear is present, adhesive will be applied to secure the joint. In case of excessive wear or damage, BMW dealers will happily replace both assemblies free of charge. Customers who previously paid for out-of-pocket repairs are eligible for financial reimbursement.
Customer notification letters will be mailed on or about October 2, 2026. Vehicle identification numbers will become searchable on the NHTSA's website on October 2, 2026, as well. Alternatively, customers may reach BMW customer service by phone.
