Designing a modern hypercar is like defusing a bomb. One tiny mistake and history will not look back on you kindly. Gone are the days when Jeremy Clarkson would drive something fast and exciting, but with several weaknesses, only to say that he loved it precisely because it wasn't perfect. This is 2026, and people expect a flawless experience behind the wheel, especially when the asking price is in the millions.
Earlier this month, Hennessey unveiled the Blackbird as an all-new, naturally-aspirated touring hypercar with a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Visually, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird served as inspiration, hence the aerospace-led surfacing and active vertical stabilizers.
Inside, it's all about driver engagement. We're talking zero screens, 100% analog controls, and you even get a physical key. The interior is stunning, and considerably more luxurious than what you got with the Venom GT and Venom F5.
The 6.2-liter V8 should be producing between 800 and 850 horsepower, while revving to more than 9,000 rpm. The Texas-built Blackbird will then hit 60 mph (97 kph) from a standstill in the 2.5-second range, before maxing out at 220 mph (354 kph).
A total of 71 examples will be produced for key global markets, and the price is a sweet $2.5 million before taxes.
This may not be Hennessey's fastest-ever car, but according to them, it represents their most significant engineering and development commitment to date. With that in mind, to better understand the thinking behind its striking exterior and remarkable approach to beauty, we spoke exclusively with Hennessey Head of Design Nathan Malinick.
autoevolution: With the Blackbird, was establishing a recognizable Hennessey design language one of the project's explicit objectives?
Malinick: "No, the Hennessey design language will come naturally. We're still relatively young in the hypercar space, which provides a lot of freedom for us as a design team to push, explore, and discover nearly constraint-free. That being said, by virtue of our proximity to F5 and Venom GT, their design DNA is in the atmosphere and echoes within the language of Blackbird."
"As time progresses the Hennessey DNA will inevitably become more defined and clear to the point of instant recognition. Blackbird introduces a new visual and philosophical expression for Hennessey that prioritizes beauty in every surface. To that end, necessarily, Blackbird establishes key Hennessey design principles of optimal proportions and voluminous sweeping surfaces with disciplined tension added only where needed."

autoevolution: Ten years from now, which element of the Blackbird would make you smile if you started seeing echoes of it on other performance cars?
Malinick: "What would make me smile 10 years on from Blackbird isn’t a single element, but rather a commitment to beauty from all automakers. Elements vary from brand to brand, rightly distinguishing themselves based on numerous factors but beauty should be the bedrock of any car, performance or otherwise."
"A common misconception and acquiescence from many brands today is that beauty is subservient to performance; this is a fallacy. Good design and good performance should work in concert on road cars. Race cars are a different story, but nonetheless there is an old adage that if a car looks fast, it generally is."
autoevolution: Given the SR-71 inspiration, was there ever a point in the design process where the rear fins could have been positioned even further apart?
Malinick: "The goal was not to put 4 wheels on the SR-71 plane and call it a day, inspiration must be applied with more subtlety than that: we pulled from the very nature of the plane to design the Blackbird car."
"Over a lifetime of ownership, we want owners to discover all the various ways the plane influenced how we designed the car, inside and out. The vertical stabilizers were always intended to be a clear reference to the SR-71, but they also had to work as part of the cohesive design rather than a literal aircraft translation."

autoevolution: The steering wheel immediately reminded us of the Bugatti Chiron. Were there any steering wheels from the industry's past or present that influenced this design?
Malinick: "The steering wheel was shaped less by any single production-car reference and more by the wider Blackbird philosophy of clarity, simplicity, and driver connection. That being said, we looked back to over 50 years ago studying truly beautiful automotive cockpits; whatever made sense from a philosophical and aesthetic standpoint is what was applied to the interior of Blackbird."
"Every control in the cabin was designed to feel purposeful, tactile, and timeless, supporting the analogue driving experience rather than drawing attention to itself."
autoevolution: Would you say the Blackbird is the first Hennessey whose design feels like it belongs to a larger volume luxury marque rather than a boutique hypercar manufacturer?
Malinick: "I'll leave that up to others to make that judgement, but practically speaking, this is a massive step on for Hennessey in that the Blackbird is all-new. An all-new carbon tub and all-new powertrain for one very crucial reason, homologation for key global markets. That alone places us in the same category as other more established hypercar marques and I'm happy to say the enthusiasts have spoken loud and clear with a resounding endorsement."
"Blackbird broadens the scope of what people may think they can expect from a Hennessey, particularly through its emphasis on elegance, usability, interior space, and long-distance comfort. However, it remains intentionally a Hennessey hypercar first and foremost, combining exclusivity and performance capability with a more mature and sophisticated design language."
autoevolution: Which part of the Blackbird required the most work from a design standpoint? Was there a particular surface that proved hardest to get right?
Malinick: "The absolute hardest section of the car is the vignette around the side pod inlet. There are so many intersecting surfaces and functions simultaneously occurring there making it very challenging. We had the diving surface leading into the opening of the sidepod, coming off the backside of the end of the front fender, interacting with the shoulder and accompanied by the high-mounted side mirrors."
"All these elements needed to resolve in an easily digestible way for the viewer and it took countless iterations. This area then ends where the defining aspect of the car begins, making it even more consequential. The surfaces around the body-side chine line define much of the car’s identity, establishing the link between aerospace inspiration and automotive sculpture."
"Achieving the right balance of tension, crease management, light reflection, stance, and proportion required significant refinement to ensure the car felt dramatic and timeless."
autoevolution: What's the biggest misconception people have about designing a modern hypercar?
Malinick: "Many people assume hypercar design begins with chasing the most aggressive appearance possible. In reality, the biggest challenge is achieving beauty while considering performance, aerodynamics, usability, visibility, packaging, and emotion."
"It is the responsibility of the designer to execute this, however, it takes an unwavering commitment from the top and trust from an incredible engineering team to make it a reality. I’m happy to say that Hennessey is in the rare and fortunate position to have both."
autoevolution: The Blackbird is clearly designed to look timeless. Was resisting the temptation to make it even more visually "extreme" one of the hardest decisions during the project?
Malinick: "Quite the opposite actually. The cry from our customer base for a return to man and machine goes deeper than powertrain and gearbox. It represents a heart longing to connect with a car, which goes beyond numbers. Beauty is almost unexplainable for most, but when you see it, you know. I believe that one falls in love with a car long before a first drive; to ignore this reality is fatal."
"So, a core principle of Blackbird was that desirability and longevity would outlast visual shock value, which meant exercising restraint. If an easier, more aggressive solution risked compromising beauty, we didn’t take it."
"By nature of Hennessey being the all-American hypercar manufacturer, some of that boldness and courage is intrinsic in the design because it’s in our nature. But largely, the Blackbird employs timeless principles, with the aim of creating a car that remains relevant for generations."
