George Banks, fifty-seven-year-old with black hair gone silver, was one of 915 Central Hudson Gas and Electric customers whose service was turned off in April.

“It was like camping at first,” Banks said. “Woke up with the sun. Used flashlights at night. But c’mon, you need to be able to charge your cellphone. You need to have your Wi-Fi.”

Banks lived without electricity for a week before he could scrape together enough money to get reconnected, an additional $60 added on to his arrears.

“So I’m pissed off,” said Banks, explaining his attendance at a Sunday rally in June, out at the Academy Green in Kingston, where forty attendees called for the passage of a bill initiating the public takeover of Central Hudson. “That’s why I’m out here.”
