Hi y’all,
I wrote something a while back that I kind of love, but I’m not sure if it has wheels or if it was one of those stories that I just needed to write for me.
Here’s the first page:
It amazed Augusta Page how lonely she felt in a room full of people, let alone a room full of family. Her husband sat at the head of the table as usual, relaxed and cheery. The boy she had fallen in love with was there somewhere under the guise of a middle-aged man with thinning hair and a rounding belly that wasn’t quite pot, but it wasn’t a flat washboard abs he’d dreamed of.
Benjamin, her eldest, sat to Dennis’ right. Her son was stoic unless he looked at Sarah, his wife of two years. They were expecting their first child in March, and the love between them was visible with each glance, each touch. Augusta tried to remember feeling that way with Dennis.
Her new son-in-law sat to his left. Jeremy was a man of twenty-five with no career, no options but had somehow won her daughter’s heart. Lana sat as close to him as possible, almost gripping his arm with possessiveness that she was known for. If something was hers, she wasn’t going to let it go until she was ready.
Augusta had tried to talk Lana out of the marriage. Tried to explain to Lana that, at nineteen, she had her whole life ahead of her. Getting married so young in this day and age was foolish.
Lana had just stared at her mother with wide, innocent, determined eyes and said, “Mom, I want what you and Dad have.”
Augusta had bit her inner lip to stop herself from blurting out, “Oh, no, honey, you don’t.”
It started as just Augusta’s story, but then it became more about the relationship between Augusta and Lana. The draft is a complete mess right now, and I’m still on the fence about rewriting it. There are books and stories that I’ve written just for me and me alone. Maybe they’ll see the light of day or maybe they’ll stay in the darkness.
That brings me to this week’s reader question:

Now, this week’s author tip is another easy one: Finish the damn book/short story. You can keep editing that opening sentence, opening paragraph until the apocalypse, but it won’t mean anything else you have the rest of the story to rewrite, revise, and edit. If you’ve never written anything before, your first task is to complete the first draft. Most people never get that far.
