Happy Friday!
I can’t believe Spring Break has flown by so quickly. I didn’t get nearly the work done that I wanted to. I meant to spend a few hours writing today and I got distracted by looking into the NSDA (national speech and debate association) as a possibility for my students next year. I love the LFA (the current league we compete in) but there are no schools close to us for the students to get in person competition time and that really is key. We head to Sacramento in just a few weeks and then our season is done for the year. It always makes me a little sad, especially since I’ll be graduating a member who competes in almost everything.
On another note, we spent a few days camping since it was spring break. I brought my computer hoping to work on the book, but there was little wifi and no way to charge devices, so I resorted to reading. I finished two books, so I’ll give you my recommendation on them.
The first book is Five Liars by DL Fisher. It’s a psychological thriller and I really wanted to love it. The premise was good - 5 people attending a bachelor/bachelorette party at a remote villa. The chapters were written from different character’s points of view so you got to see unreliable narration. Even the twist was good and one I didn’t see coming. My big problem with this book was that it also had a huge plot hole. At one point, two characters go up a ladder to reach a second floor room that is locked. The first one supposedly makes it, the second one falls due to the ladder being knocked over. However, then the first one shows up again and supposedly used the ladder to get down. This bothered me so much that I couldn’t really enjoy the rest of the book, but if you’d like to check it out, click the link below. I gave it 4 stars. Oh, and there is some language.
Then I found a Freida McFadden book that I hadn’t read before. Dear Debbie. I love Freida’s books generally. She’s a very good writer and she keeps it pretty clean. This one had a few curse words but otherwise it was clean. It was well-written and though the catch is a simple one, it’s well done. It caught me by surprise. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the ending, but I’d still give it 4.5 stars. If you like psychological thrillers, you can’t go wrong with this one.
This next one I haven’t read, but I offered to swap with a fellow author, and I thought we might try something new. Some of you have way more time to read than I do and I value your opinion and I’m sure others would too, so if you read this book, would you send me a note or comment on the post with what you thought.
