One of the questions I get asked from time to time is whether Tango was my first canine detective.
The answer is no.
Before Tango was sniffing around Fox Hollow, there was Pip.
Pip is a Jack Russell Terrier who stars in my Little Dog Diner mysteries. She may be small, but she has enough personality to fill an entire town—and then some.
She wears colorful bandanas like they’re a fashion statement, rides around town in a convertible with her feet on the dashboard, and spends as much time as possible running along the Blueberry Bay beaches in Maine. If there’s a wave to chase, a squirrel to investigate, or a mystery to stick her nose into, Pip is usually first in line.
Of course, Pip doesn’t see herself as a “pet.” She considers herself a valuable member of the investigative team.
While Dani Mackenzie is busy running the Little Dog Diner and trying to keep up with whatever trouble has landed in Misty Harbor, Pip is quietly gathering clues. Sometimes that means finding something everyone else overlooked. Sometimes it means staring suspiciously at exactly the right person. And occasionally it means creating enough chaos to accidentally uncover the truth.
If you’ve read the series, you already know Pip has a special talent for being in the right place at the right time. Or perhaps the wrong place at exactly the right time.
Thinking about Pip recently made me realize something. Whether it’s Pip in Misty Harbor or Tango in Fox Hollow (book 1 releasing on 9/16), my stories always seem to include a dog who refuses to stay out of the investigation…or the spotlight.
Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hello,
Tango here with a quick detective observation.
I’ve heard a lot about this Pip character.
She rides in convertibles.
She wears bandanas.
She runs on beaches.
Very impressive.
I roll in leaves, herd suspects, and supervise cooking club meetings.
We all have our strengths.
My Detective Tip of the Week: Never judge a clue by its size. The smallest paw print can lead to the biggest mystery.
