The USA App

America was the Enlightenment’s killer app. Liberty and reason, self-determination, features nobody had successfully shipped before. The beta launched in 1776. The full release was messy, the documentation was incomplete, and the terms of service excluded most of the users, but the core architecture was revolutionary.

Two hundred and fifty years later the app is still running. Barely.

The malware got in the way all malware does, not through the front door but through a trusted update. Packaged to look like a patch. Sold as a fix. The users clicked yes.

Now the developers are feuding over the source code. One faction wants to roll back to a version that never actually existed. Another is trying to fork the project entirely. A third is just watching the repo burn while filing strongly worded issues.

The original developers are unavailable for comment. They’re dead, which is inconvenient, because everyone is citing them for contradictory propositions and there’s no one left to say that’s not what we meant.

What they meant was: reason is the operating system. Pull reason out and the whole thing runs on vibes, grievance, and cached resentments from 1861.

The Enlightenment assumed the users would read the manual. The users have never read the manual. The manual is nearly two hundred and fifty years old, written in eighteenth century legalese, and currently being interpreted by nine people with lifetime appointments and irreconcilable priors.

Two hundred and fifty years. The app still launches. The interface is a disaster. The architecture is showing its age. And the users are arguing about whether the founder who wrote all men are created equal while owning people was a hero, a hypocrite, or both.

He was both.

That’s the American condition. Holding the highest ideals and the worst conduct in the same hand, simultaneously, without resolution.
