Welcome my sweet and cozy world. The only steamy thing in here is the coffee.
Since moving to South Carolina, we’ve seen some fairly unusual creatures in the wild. We saw standard forest creatures—deer, foxes, raccoons, squirrels, etc.—in West Virginia, but South Carolina takes the cake. Here are some of my favorites:
Coyote - Shortly after moving to a small town about 25 minutes from the Atlantic coast, a coyote ran through our yard. We hear them in the woods behind our house, especially at night.
Alligator - Who needs to pay hefty entry fees to alligator attractions when you can drive around Lake Waccamaw and see them for free? This lake is almost 9k acres. In addition to alligators, you’ll likely see waterfowl and turtles.
Spoonbill - A whole flock of pink spoonbills hangs out in a Myrtle Beach retaining pond. I’m quite obsessed with flamingos, so seeing their equally pink cousins when out running errands was a real treat.
Black bear - When we lived in West Virginia, I had to go pick up a delivery at the mail shed. (Yep. We were so rural that mail didn’t even get delivered to our homes.) On the way to the car, I thought, “That’s a weird looking dog.” Spoiler: it was a black bear. I walked right past it. I sat in the car until it wandered off and then carefully went back into the house to freak out.
Venus flytrap - These curious plants are native to where I live. I’ve loved Venus flytraps since having one as a kid, and then seeing Audrey asking Seymour to feed her in Little Shop of Horrors.

I’ve always been a little obsessed with coyotes. When I was very young, I got the book Wild Traveler by A. M. Lightner at a Scholastic book fair. I still have this book. The tattered cover and pages are a testament to how many times I read it as a kid.
