Do you ever have one of those weeks where everything is just going too great so you’ve gotta get flattened to make up for it? This is where I write to all of you with a lovely case of food poisoning after eating who-knows-what on a fun trip to Mexico City with my family for my husband’s birthday. Sigh.
Last week I also got to attend the premiere of The Vampire Lestat—which, if any of you are like me and went through an Anne Rice/Interview with the Vampire stage years ago, is thrilling. If you’re not familiar with the new version of the show, you should be. I truly believe it’s among the best writing on television, and the first two seasons are on Netflix, so it’s easy to catch up! But for this season, it’s all about Lestat, and they had the actor who plays him do a full concert at the premiere. So that was out-of-body incredible.
Then the next night I went to see The Lost Boys, which is also just a stunning production. Then off to Mexico City where I ate all the tacos! And…something that probably made me ill. Can’t go up without coming down, right?
And through it all, we need happy books!
We are really in the season of romcoms. May and June have so many releases it’s hard to keep up. Two of my favorites have books out this week: Tia Williams’ The Missed Connection and Kristina Forest’s The Summer Girlfriend. Can’t wait to read those.
I also just finished and absolutely adored Annabel Monaghan’s Dolly All the Time. Annabel somehow always manages to write books about grounded-middle aged women who also get the fairy tale, and this one is no different. Her beleaguered Dolly is taking care of everyone in her family while working at her dad’s fish shop when along comes the scion of the wealthiest family in town with an interesting proposition for her. Annabel’s prose is so immediate, and I love everything she writes. So her newest is definitely a great beach read to grab!
Summer has me thinking of Italy, and I was so excited to see that Danielle Callegari released a book called a Bite Sized History of Italy, and it’s a delightful little book about the gastronomic history of one of the best food countries around. If you’ve read The Slow Burn and want more Italian food tangents, then this is a great one for you. It also reminded me of one of my all-time favorites, Katie Quinn’s Cheese, Wine, and Bread, which is a delightful food tour of England, Italy and France — a travelogue and a journalistic endeavor all in one.
Anyway, can you tell I’m dreaming of summer travels?! Hope you’re all cooking as a way to get away this time of year!
I love any time creative people’s talents get to be shown on the fly, and that’s what happened when an audience member had to step in at a recent symphony performance when one of the musicians got sick. They stepped in sight unseen and just joined in!
Also—is anyone else rooting for Keke Palmer and the Hot Ones guy as much as I am? I know we’re being had, but I do not care. This is the romcom we need!
I know my newsletters have been light on my books for a while, and I promise that’s going to change soon. I’ve got so much exciting news coming up to share that I’m practically bursting with it, and I promise it’s coming soon. But in the meantime, I so appreciate you being here, and I hope this has brought you a little dose of joy!
