When Headlines Become Evidence: What Does ‘One Week in Australia’ Actually Tell Us?

This graphic caught my attention for exactly that reason.

Headed “ONE WEEK IN AUSTRALIA”, it brings together a series of disturbing headlines: sexual assault allegations, teenagers charged with sexual offences, men convicted of rape, an alleged domestic violence murder and threats directed towards women in politics.

At the top is another headline:

“One in three Aus boys believe gender equality has ‘gone too far’.”

The accompanying Facebook post goes further:

“Anyone defending this ‘manosphere’ garbage right now can get in the bin.”

It describes Australia as having come close to gender equality, only to have progress threatened by culture wars, and ends with:

“ZERO TOLERANCE!”

There is no question that the individual stories deserve to be taken seriously.

Nor should the research concerning attitudes among young men be brushed aside.

But there is an important question hiding inside the presentation:

What exactly has been demonstrated here, and what has merely been implied?
