Lake Travis football update: player 'receiving best possible care'

A GoFundMe account set up to support the family of the Lake Travis High School football player who suffered a medical emergency during the team’s Aug. 10 practice has already raised more than $78,000.

The player, senior offensive lineman Odin Hensley, suffered cardiac arrest shortly before 8 a.m. EMS arrived within minutes, and Hensley was taken by Travis County STAR Flight to Dell Children’s Medical Center, where he continues to receive care.

“Doctors are worried about his brain and organs, and the family does not yet know what the outcome will be,” the GoFundMe explains.

On what should have been the second football practice ahead of the 2026 season, Lake Travis High School’s focus remains fully on the health of a student-athlete who experienced a medical emergency during Monday morning’s practice.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, school officials had no update on the student-athlete’s condition. A statement by Lake Travis athletic director/football coach Hank Carter posted on the football team’s Facebook page Monday night thanked the countless well-wishers who had reached out and said the player “is currently receiving the absolute best possible care available….”

Lake Travis ISD communications director Marco Alvarado said the district would provide an update when appropriate.

“Please continue to keep our player and his family in your thoughts and prayers,” Carter’s post concluded. “We appreciate your understanding and support as we prioritize his health and privacy.”

The football team was scheduled to practice for several hours Tuesday morning. Alvarado said that session began with a team meeting and consisted of a light workout on the field. Players wore helmets and no other pads.

According to sources and social media posts from witnesses to Monday’s practice:

• Players arrived at Lake Travis’ grass practice fields shortly around 7:10 a.m., went through stretching and warm-up exercises, and at 7:25 a.m. began going through what coaches typically describe as walk-through drills;

• Less than 30 minutes into the practice, the player began experiencing a medical emergency. Trainers and coaches responded immediately, a 911 call made and EMS was on-site and attending to the player by 7:55 a.m.;

• Players were escorted from the field. A witness wrote in a social media post that “coaches handled the emotions of the moment while quickly and calmly getting the other players off the field without creating additional panic. At the same time, the young man in need was immediately surrounded by LT staff and EMS professionals, with all hands on deck doing everything possible to protect him, care for him, and give him the attention he needed.”

• Travis County STAR Flight arrived and transported the player to a hospital, eventually identified in media reports as Dell Children’s Medical Center.
