Quote of the Day: “I’ve learned in the past few years that I need to take care of myself. Much of that, for me, is about being in nature and reflecting and seizing the mini-moments.” -Mary Celeste Beall, owner of Blackberry Mountain

A dreamy Southern wellness getaway.
By Christina Chao

Blackberry Farm is a glamorous and comforting celebration of Southern cuisine and culture in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. This 4,200-acre resort is where you’ll embrace the life of shooting clays and fly-fishing and hiking in your Barbour as you gaze upon the great Smokies in the distance. With 14 floating treehouses, six small cabins and 20 green-roofed cottages, Blackberry Mountain features a handful of multibedroom houses for rent—all crafted from stone and hand-hewn wood. An outsize spa and recreation facility called the Hub offers yoga and art studios and a basketball court. Dining options include the flagship Three Sisters restaurant in the main lodge and the more casual mountaintop Firetower, both of which serve a high-elevation, foraging-friendly iteration of Foothills Cuisine, which means rugged, refined cooking done with seasonal mountain ingredients, and employs a long roster of artisans (gardeners, cheese makers, craft brewers) to bring the style to life.

The resort spans 5,200 acres with space for about 130 guests at once, with its intimate treehouses as a more than perfect hideaway. In winter, bare trees reveal a perfect sunrise and in summer the lush growth offers unadulterated privacy for sunrise yoga on the deck (mats provided) or canoodling with your significant other.

The treehouses also come with king-size beds centered in front of a darling stove (which s’mores ingredients are artfully placed each night during turn down service) and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the aforementioned vistas. Pre-chopped wood is provided both inside and outside the treehouses for self-start or guests can request for the stove to be lit as they savor their last bites at dinner to return to a romantic ambiance. Open the sliding doors in the summer and enjoy listening to nothing—silence. And on rainy days, stay in bed and appreciate doing nothing.

The hub of the property is the spa, Nest, that flows out to the heated infinity pool and jacuzzi, as well as culinary and cocktail options for all-day indulging. Back at the Hub, there are over 24 classes one can try like TRX, sound bathing, cardio drumming, and hot yoga to get energized. The 30 spacious cottages have cozy touches like fireplaces and heated stone floors and are clustered around the main lodge, which is built from timber and stone and has an intimate spa where you can indulge in herbal-poultice massages and acupuncture. At night, the whole place takes on a convivial, summer-camp-for-grown-ups atmosphere, as cocktails are poured and guests chat about their day. You will come to Blackberry Mountain to be restored by the yoga and the sound bathing, or at the very least get a massage. But the view is what will really heal you. CHECK IN NOW.

Owner of Blackberry Mountain

Sam Beall, the late proprietor of Blackberry Farm, the celebrated Relais & Châteaux resort that made Walland, Tennessee, an international destination. When he died in a skiing accident in Colorado in 2016, at the age of 39, the loss was felt across America’s food and hospitality communities. It was Sam’s father Sandy (founder of the Ruby Tuesday restaurant chain) and mother Kreis who bought Blackberry Farm in 1976 as a family hideaway. They began hosting private events and taking paying guests soon thereafter, but it wasn’t until 1990 that Blackberry Farm was opened to the public year-round. In the ensuing decade, they continued to scale up, transforming the property into an increasingly luxe destination, handing it off to Sam in 2002. With the support and collaboration of his wife Mary Celeste, he made Blackberry Farm the place it is today, while the couple raised five children (now between six and 20 years old) in a home on the property.
