I’ve loved learning a bit more about the tradition behind today while scrolling Instagram this morning. Between @thequietbotanist’s thoughtful post and a few beautiful moments from Dior, I found myself going down a bit of a rabbit hole on La Fête du Muguet.
@Aerin just shared that she picked up a bundle from our neighborhood favorite, Butterfield Market, so I may be heading that way shortly to join in on the celebration.
Celebrated each May 1st in France, La Fête du Muguet centers around gifting small bouquets of lily of the valley as a token of happiness and good luck. The tradition dates back to when King Charles IX received a sprig and began presenting them annually to the women of his court. Over time friends and family exchanged the fragrant stems as a symbol of happiness, renewal, and appreciation.
The flower’s meaning has made it a natural fit within weddings for centuries. Often associated with purity, a return to happiness, and good fortune in marriage, it has long been favored in bridal bouquets and ceremonial florals. From Grace Kelly to Kate Middleton, its presence has remained consistent.
