Hi everyone! I’m sure I’m not the only one upon buying all the supplies for a new hobby, looks at the hobby and says, “I have no idea what I’m doing.” before contemplating quitting that hobby. That was me this weekend realizing that the spot in the backyard I was planning to plant my spelt really wasn’t in “full sun” as needed, and could only creatively be called “partial sun”. It was more like “full shade”. In fact our whole backyard is extremely shady. I’m not sure why I thought growing my own hat was a good idea.

After threatening to return all the supplies I bought I located another possible spot for my spelt. Our side yard gets lots of sun! However it is covered in turf. It seemed like quite the commitment to rip out a 4x15 foot plot of grass just for a spelt experiment. What if I couldn’t get my garden to grow? Now I would have a giant dirt patch in the front yard, looking at me accusingly until it inevitably was overrun by weeds. Weeds that I would ignore like the true hobbyist champion I am.
But like most of my fellow hobbyists, I had a moment of manic energy and committed. I ripped out the turf in the most unprofessional method ever, so there is no going back. The spelt is planted, it rained a bit this morning, so I’m well on my way on my “grow my own straw hat” experiment.
A Few Obsessions From This Week

And after. I fenced off the area so that
the local cats know its their new toiletwe don’t accidentally stomp on the seeds.
