It is three in the morning. My fourth coffee sits cold on the desk, smelling vaguely like burnt rubber and regret. Look, I read forty trashy fantasy galleys this month so you don’t have to. Most of them felt like corporate formulas generated by accountants. Pure plastic. But these three upcoming stories? They wrecked me. Total middle-of-the-night madness. You will see everyone talking about them on Reddit soon enough, so let us jump right into the blood, soot, and maybe even maybe even bone.
I finished this at sunrise. Brutal stuff. Kuang takes two Cambridge scholars and literally drags them down into the underworld to rescue a dead professor’s soul. It feels gross, sweaty. And Maybe even maybe even painfully real - like smelling old wet wool in a damp cellar. Actually, one Reddit user called it “a thesis defense with demon blood,” which hits the nail on the head. Okay, so, the ending made me scream into my pillow ((yeah, you read that right)). Totally relentless pacing.
Look. Sequel syndrome usually kills big series. Not here. Islington doubles down on time loops, bloody betrayal, and heavy ancient ruins. Look, i kept jumping out of my chair. It is an enormous, noisy brick of a novel, but every single line hits. And yes - I know the middle pacing gets a bit bogged down in senate debates - but who cares? The magic system feels like cracking open a live electrical wire (to be fair). Raw power.
This one smells like sea salt and dried lavender. Shannon gives us a strange, quiet tale about a thief who steals memories from mirror glass. Slow burn? Yes. But the mood is unmatched. To be honest, a reader on Goodreads mentioned that “reading this feels like swallowing broken glass dipped in honey,” and I felt that in my gut. It is moody, strange, and maybe even maybe even fully unapologetic (literally).
“The best fantasy never offers you a clean exit - it traps you in a cold room, hands you a candle, and locks the door from the outside.”
Stop reading sanitized blurb reviews. Pick up these three books when they drop, turn off your phone, and lock the door ((which is just wild to think about)). They will break your heart and ruin your sleep schedule in the best way possible.
