Shock lawsuit: Music Industry seeks 2.6B from Verizon over repeat infringers

ATTORNEY STEVE® NEWS: A huge lawsuit was filed recently in New York federal district court brought by many large music industry players against Verizon Communications, and ISP alleged to have inadequate compliance with the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). The DMCA provides “safe harbors” for online service providers but the safe harbors only serves as a liability defense if repeat infringers (in this case people downloading copyrighted music from famous groups such as Prince, Madonna, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac and others) are kept at bay and a policy exists to terminate them.

The record labels are challenging Verizon’s repeat infringer policy compliance and implementation after an alleged 17,300 songs were downloaded, and DMCA notices were repeatedly ignored.
