The Life I Almost Chose

There are lives we live, and then there are the ones that almost happened.

Not the obvious ones. Not the dramatic forks in the road we can point to and name with certainty. I mean the quieter turns. The decisions that didn’t feel like decisions at the time. The moments that passed without ceremony, but somehow changed everything.

I think about them more than I expect to. Not with regret, but with a kind of curiosity that never quite settles. The sense that somewhere, just out of reach, there is another version of my life continuing on without me.

There was a moment in Paris where I almost stayed.

It wasn’t planned. It wasn’t even logical. It was just a feeling that arrived one afternoon and refused to leave. I remember sitting at a small table, the kind that barely holds a cup and a notebook, watching the city move without asking anything of me. No expectations. No past. Just the quiet permission to exist as I was in that moment.

For a few days, I let myself imagine it. Finding a place. Learning the rhythm of the streets. Becoming someone whose life fit inside that city in a way mine never quite had anywhere else.

But then I left.

Not because I didn’t want it, but because something else pulled me back. Responsibilities, maybe. Or timing. Or a version of myself that wasn’t ready to become someone new in such a permanent way.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I stayed. Not in a way that wishes I had, but in a way that acknowledges it could have been real.

There are other moments like that.

Conversations that almost turned into something more. Paths I considered just long enough to feel their weight before setting them down.

The job I didn’t take because it felt too far from who I thought I was. The person I didn’t choose because I wasn’t sure I could meet them where they were.

At the time, each decision felt small. Reasonable. Easy to explain.

But looking back, I can see how much they shaped the direction of everything that came after.

What we don’t talk about enough is how many lives we leave behind just by continuing forward.

Every yes carries a quiet no inside it.
Every choice closes something, even as it opens something else.

And those closed doors don’t disappear. They stay somewhere in us, not as regrets, but as possibilities that were once real enough to feel.

I used to think wondering about those lives meant I wasn’t fully present in this one. That if I thought too much about what could have been, I would lose sight of what is.

But I don’t believe that anymore.

There’s a difference between longing and curiosity. Between wishing for another life and simply recognizing that it existed as an option. You can honor the paths you didn’t take without needing to walk them.

I wonder who I would have been if I stayed in Paris.

If I had chosen differently in those smaller moments. If I had followed the version of myself that felt just slightly out of reach at the time.

But I also know this: that version of me is only a possibility because of the one I chose to become.

The life I almost lived didn’t disappear.
It shaped me in quieter ways.

It taught me what I was drawn to.
What I was afraid of.
What I might still be capable of choosing, in a different form.

There is something grounding in realizing that your life is not the result of one decision, but of many.

Some intentional. Some instinctive. Some made without fully understanding their impact. And still, they brought you here. Not to the perfect version of your life, but to a real one.

A lived one.

I think we carry all our almosts with us.

Not as unfinished stories, but as quiet companions. Reminders that there was never just one way for things to unfold.

And maybe that’s the point.

Not to choose perfectly. Not to find the one right path. But to live fully in the one you’re on, knowing it was never the only option.

If you’ve been thinking about the life you almost chose, let it be a moment of reflection, not regret. Let it remind you that your life has always been shaped by possibility. That there are still choices ahead of you. Still versions of yourself you haven’t met yet.

The story didn’t end when you chose one path.

It just began.

Before you go, I want to leave you with this:

Write one sentence about a life you almost lived.

Don’t overthink it.
Just let it be honest.
