The “romance of summer” I used to call it. It was my way of putting a positive spin on my least favorite season, the time of year that is too hot, has too many hours in the day, and produces too much produce to deal with from the garden. Summer feels like endless work at a time of year that seems to instead to insist on rest. Those cucumbers and zucchinis keep on reproducing, even when I am too hot and tired to do anything but lay on the couch. Or are you entertaining the kids for three months at home? I hear you.
But if we were to put on those rosy glasses and think of summer as an indulgent time, a time to take it easier (laying on the couch, or the beach) and yet allow your “be productive” gene to express itself, what then would you do with your time?

The second season of At the Iowa Farm Table has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still listen. There are more than 20 episodes now in our line up, covering topics from why the water in Iowa is of such low quality, to how we can diversify what we grow in Iowa, to what it is like for a fifth-generation Black farm family to grow crops here in Iowa.
Below are five of my favorite podcast episodes below—ones that would be great for laying around the house while learning a thing or two. Or even to listen to while making dinner or driving the kids to the pool and waiting for them at swim lessons. They are all under 15 minutes long, a great length for a short interlude of me-time.
And if you prefer to listen via a player (apple podcasts, spotify, youtube, etc) the podcast is available in all those places too.
Last, if you are a listener and enjoy the podcast, please, please leave reviews—especially in those other players. That is what gets the podcast up in the que for those interested in the topic. And also consider sharing it with a friend or two. You never know who needs a little summer time pick me up.
See you in September!
