The View I Didn't Realize I Was Missing

A simple home project, four years in the making, and the reminder that sometimes the things we overlook are the very things waiting to bring us joy.

A few weeks ago, a large box showed up at our front door.

Now, if you’ve ever renovated a home, you know that a delivery box can mean one of two things: excitement... or another project.

In this case, it was both.

Inside were the window shades I’d been waiting for our kitchen.

The funny thing is, when they arrived, I was excited, but not nearly as excited as I thought I would be.

After all, they were just window treatments.

Or so I thought.

As I sat there looking at that box, I started thinking about how long we’d lived without them.

This house has been a labor of love from the very beginning. We bought it as a fixer-upper, knowing it wasn’t going to become our forever home overnight. We planned to do most of the work ourselves. We knew it would take time. And honestly, we’ve come a long way.

Room by room.

Project by project.

Year by year.

But when those shades arrived, I realized something that stopped me in my tracks.

For nearly four years, I had been overlooking one of the most important views in our home.

Now, technically, the window wasn’t bare. I had temporary curtains hanging there. You know the kind—the “this will do for now” solution that somehow stays around for years.

And somehow, I had convinced myself that was fine.

Every morning, I sat at that table.

Every afternoon, I walked past that window.

Every evening, I looked out at the backyard.

Yet I had stopped seeing it.

What We Stop Seeing

Isn’t it amazing what we can get used to?

The things that bother us at first eventually fade into the background. What once felt temporary starts feeling normal. What once felt unfinished becomes invisible.

Not because it serves us.

Not because we love it.

But simply because we’ve adapted.

I think we do this in our homes all the time.

We get used to the cluttered corner.

The unfinished project.

The drawer that sticks.

The room we’ve been meaning to decorate.

The wall we’ve been planning to paint.

We tell ourselves we’ll get to it someday, and before we know it, someday becomes years.

Then something changes.

One small improvement.

One finished project.

One tiny upgrade.

And suddenly we wonder how we ever lived without it.

The Difference One Small Change Can Make

That’s exactly what happened when these shades went up.

Originally, I thought I wanted plantation shutters. I had them in our previous home and loved them. But now that these shades are installed, I’m so grateful I chose differently.

They filter light instead of blocking it.

They preserve the view instead of competing with it.

They open and close with a remote, which means no tugging, pulling, or fingerprints.

And my favorite detail? The beautiful blue trim that feels like it was made specifically for this space.

Most importantly, they allow sunlight to pour into the room.

And if you’ve been around here for any length of time, you know how much natural light means to me.

The moment they were installed, the entire area felt different.

Not because the room changed dramatically.

But because it finally felt finished.

Intentional.

Loved.

Complete.

A Little Reminder for This Week

And sitting there this week, coffee in hand, looking out that window, I couldn’t stop smiling.

Not because of the shades.

But because of what they reminded me.

Sometimes the things we settle for become so familiar that we stop noticing them.

Until one day, we finally make the change and realize how much joy was waiting on the other side.

So here’s my little encouragement for you this week:

Take a fresh look around your home.

What have you stopped seeing?

What have you convinced yourself doesn’t matter anymore?

What temporary solution has quietly become permanent?

You don’t need to renovate an entire house.

Sometimes all it takes is one window.

One corner.

One small project you’ve been putting off.

Because sometimes the smallest changes bring the biggest sense of joy.

And sometimes, the thing that transforms a room isn’t what you add.

It’s finally noticing what you’ve been overlooking all along.

Happy Organizing,

Nikki 🤍
