I fell in love with it.
Today, I wouldn’t trade it for my old office.
The smaller footprint challenged me to become more intentional with every inch, and because of that, this office feels more efficient, more beautiful, and far more inspiring than the larger one ever did.
It’s cozy.
It’s functional.
It’s surrounded by reminders of the work I’ve been blessed to accomplish.
And every morning when I walk in, it invites me to create.

Here are a few of the organizational and design principles that have completely transformed my workspace. They help me make the most of every square inch while creating a space that is both highly functional and deeply inspiring.
One of my favorite pieces in my office is my desk.
Believe it or not, I found it on Facebook Marketplace for just $50.
When I first saw it, I knew it had great bones. Mike brought it home, refinished it, and painted it the most beautiful soft blue—a color that feels perfectly at home with both my brand at At Home with Nikki and the rest of our home.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that quality doesn’t always mean expensive.
With a little patience and creativity, you can often find solid wood furniture that’s built to last for less than the price of many inexpensive particleboard desks on the market today.
I didn’t want my office to feel like...well...an office.
I wanted it to feel like an extension of our home.
Warm.
Collected.
Beautiful.
A place where I genuinely enjoy spending time.
Now every time I sit down to work, I’m sitting at what truly feels like my dream desk.
Sometimes the best furniture simply needs someone willing to see its potential.
One of the best decisions I made was taking advantage of my vertical space.
When floor space is limited, it’s tempting to buy a wider desk or an L-shaped workstation. But that often leaves the room feeling crowded.
Instead, I built upward.
My desk includes shelving, a hutch, drawers, and cabinets that extend vertically, creating what almost feels like a custom wall unit. Everything I need is within arm’s reach while the room itself still feels open and spacious.
Vertical storage doesn’t just add function—it adds beauty.
The shelves allow me to display decorative objects, meaningful books, baskets, and treasured pieces while also providing practical storage. Instead of clutter collecting across my desktop, everything has a designated home.
I also love having different storage types built into one workspace:
Shelves for décor and baskets
Drawers for paperwork and files
Cabinets for technology and equipment
Every inch works harder.
One small detail I use every single day is a tiny drop tray.
Whenever I’m working, I like to remove my rings or bracelets, so I’m comfortable while typing. Instead of placing them randomly around the room, they always go into one designated spot.
Ironically, my favorite tray wasn’t even designed for jewelry.
I found it at one of my favorite local vintage shops, White Owl. It’s actually a vintage silver wine bottle coaster.
Today it serves an entirely different purpose.
Organization doesn’t always come from the office supply aisle.
Sometimes the most beautiful storage solutions are the ones we never intended to use that way.
If I could recommend one design element for every workspace, it would be a lamp.
Lighting completely changes how a room feels.
Yes, it provides task lighting.
But it also creates warmth and ambiance.
Turning on my lamp signals to my brain that it’s time to settle in and create.
Behind the plant on my desk, I also keep a small uplight.
It’s a tiny addition that creates the most beautiful glow in the mornings and evenings.
Never underestimate what good lighting can do—not just for your eyes, but for your mood.
Every office deserves something living.
I always keep a plant (or two) on my desk because it softens the room and brings a sense of calm.
Our surroundings affect how we feel.
Bringing a little bit of nature indoors reminds us to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the space we’ve created.
One of my favorite organizing materials is acrylic.
I love acrylic trays because they provide all the function without adding visual heaviness.
Especially in a smaller office, transparent organizers almost disappear, allowing the beautiful pieces around them to remain the focus.
Sometimes the best organization is the kind you hardly notice.
Some of my favorite organizers were never meant to organize anything.
One example is a candle vessel I couldn’t bear to throw away after the candle was gone.
Now it stores my small desk essentials.
The beautiful gold lid didn’t even belong to that candle.
It came from another decorative piece tucked away in my home.
Together, they became something entirely new.
Don’t be afraid to mix pieces together to create something uniquely yours.
One of the most meaningful pieces in my office is a glass candy dish that now holds my favorite pens.
It was originally given to my mother more than 45 years ago by my fourth-grade teacher.
She was the first teacher I ever had who looked like me.
Without ever saying the words, she made me believe I could become anything I wanted to be.
Years later, after my mother passed it on to me, that candy dish found a permanent home on my desk.
Today it holds pens instead of candy.
But its greatest purpose isn’t what it stores.
It’s what it reminds me of.
Every time I glance at it, I’m reminded of possibility.
It reminds me where I came from.
The people who believed in me.
And how one person’s quiet example can change another person’s life.
I love family photographs.
But I also believe a desk shouldn’t become a photo gallery.
Choose one or two meaningful images that bring you joy without overwhelming the space.
Let those photographs become quiet reminders of the people you’re working for and the life you’re building.
For years people felt they had to choose between gold or silver.
I don’t.
My office happily combines both.
The warmth of gold paired with the timeless elegance of silver creates a collected look that feels layered, sophisticated, and personal.
If you love it, it belongs.
If you don’t have much drawer space, trays become your best friend.
I keep my stapler, tape, scissors, and everyday tools grouped together on one beautiful tray.
Instead of looking cluttered, everything feels intentional because it’s visually contained.
Grouping like items together instantly makes a desk feel calmer and more organized.
Not everything has to earn its place through productivity.
Sometimes beauty is reason enough.
I have a cute vase resting on top of a stack of books.
It doesn’t organize paperwork.
It doesn’t hold supplies.
Its only purpose is to make me feel good.
And I think that’s important.
When we’re surrounded by beauty, we tend to care for our spaces differently.
Beauty inspires us.
It slows us down.
It reminds us that home—even a home office—is meant to be enjoyed.
If there’s one philosophy that’s guided every decision in my office, it’s this:
Every item should earn its place.
Some items earn their place because they’re functional.
Some because they’re beautiful.
Some because they tell your story.
And some have all three.
When those three things come together, your desk becomes more than a place to answer emails or check off a to-do list.
It becomes a place where ideas are born.
A place where creativity flourishes.
A place that welcomes you every morning and quietly reminds you that the work you’re doing matters.
Because organization isn’t about creating a picture-perfect office.
It’s about creating a space that makes you excited to sit down, dream big, and do the work you’ve been called to do.
