The internet (aka X) lost it this Saturday when my fellow Canadian Grimes made an appeal to save millennial women’s ovaries (of course, the day I was offline…).
Women with big platforms have been talking about menopause for a couple of years now; Oprah and The Menopause Revolution Special, Halle Berry going to Capitol Hill and her wellness platform, come to mind. Just two weeks ago, Melinda Gates pledged capital for menopause care.
The big difference here is that it is a millennial woman asking for solutions that go beyond care.
GenX women broke the dam on the menopause conversation, so now we are having workplace policies, tons of education and commentary on IG, and many tele-health platforms that provide HRT and/or wellness recommendations. But millennial women want something that could delay them or save them from going through menopause.
Just this week, AthenaBIO-supported project Gero announced a new $17M funding round. This is a bigger deal than many people realize, especially for women: AthenaBIO seeded a target discovery program focused on ovarian aging, which could be a major step toward developing new drugs to treat menopause.
The valley is talking about topics ranging from ovarian cryopreservation to rapamycin. They are sadly still speculative procedures. We simply need more research, clinical trials, and data collection for all of it.
We want women (and men) to know:
what is possible
what they could do today, and
how they can be active participants in the research
GLP-1s and Viagra are two revolutionary drugs that happened in many ways by happenstance. However, they both required billions, clinical trials, and pharma to care. Maybe a menopause drug will happen the same way, but the reality is that for us to increase the odds, we need for academia, biotech, and the life sciences in general to believe this is the moonshot we are convinced it is.
We have been sharing with some of our network privately The O Brief - a document we put together as a resource for Ovarian Health - to jump start a very special new project. Though we are not ready to make an announcement yet, we decided to get this online ASAP for everyone to get a 101 on the field of research that menopause is part of. Please feel free to share this tool.
Everyone needs to understand that the only way to solve the unmet need of menopause is to do the research that can help us tackle biology at its core.
We also decided to do a special menopause online event, featuring a first, exclusive interview with a researcher working on a drug to extend fertility.
We’ll dive into:
Ovarian Cryopreservation
Rapamycin
Data Collection
AI & Drug Discovery
Date: Friday, June 26th
Time: 11 AM PST / 2 PM ET / 8 PM CET
Location: Online
