Blacklists aren’t something that I’m not new to. Having played World of Warcraft for many years on the roleplay servers, they are actually common. Technically speaking, the purpose of a blacklist is to notify the community at large of unsavory activity. Such as harassment, pedophilia, rape, racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, and everything else under the sun.

The problem with blacklists is that people can use them to cause a witch hunt and a campaign of harassment against the wrong person. Something that the individual can’t recover from.

Worse is that it can lead to doxing and even harassment in the real world space.

Now while it’s important to cull the community of certain people who are guilty of doing certain things but at the same time, it’s also important to make sure that the information that you have is 100% accurate.

I’ve seen it happen where people have accused people of things that they didn’t do but were being stalked by their harassers because the other person didn’t like them. If anything people use blacklists as a way to harass other people.

Which is why any information being submitted to burn book type blogs and even blacklist accounts needs to be vetted before being posted. Meaning someone has to go through the information and make sure that not only is it accurate but that it’s not being used to go after the wrong person.

People have done less when it comes to clout and to ruining another person. It’s why people have done swatting in the past. Where they dox someone and then try to get their local SWAT team called on them.

Sometimes it’s a life or death thing that can ruin someone’s life.

While yes there are people out there that shouldn’t be in the community, however, that doesn’t mean that you have to go through great lengths to try and destroy someone’s life just because you don’t like them.

There are better ways of doing it and blacklists aren’t necessarily going to be one of them. I hope that there is a time when this isn’t the case, but as long as social media exists, it’s going to be hard to try to stop this from happening.

I honestly have never been a fan of blacklists or people making blacklists. People are grown adults and are or at least should be able to make certain ideas about the things that go on. They should be able to reach a reasonable conclusion on their own without someone telling them who they should be or shouldn’t be interacting with.

I’ve always held onto the notion that if I don’t like to interact with someone, I’m just going to block them. Though when I had my own issues with someone I did utilize a form of blacklisting, however, I’ve learned and outgrown that.

I try not to tell people who to follow or who not to follow. I don’t pay for their subscriptions or anything of that nature. I let people make their own conclusions as again, everyone is an adult or should be an adult.

Everyone should be capable of making their own decision. And that’s the bottom line.
