Naive Set channel Bill Murray on Anywhere but Here

There’s a scene in the 1984 classic Ghostbusters where Bill Murray starts speak-singing with the music, in key, swelling behind him, and for a second it almost seems like the action/sci-fi/comedy is about to add “musical” to its list of genres. “Call it fate, call it luck, call it karma,” he goes, still early in the film, imagining a bright future to come. 

In Naive Set’s latest single, “Anywhere but Here,” they expand on that sentiment, directly quoting both Murray’s lines and cadence, but reverse it. No longer looking forward, but back on love lost, imagining an alternate ending long after the credits rolled.

“If I could change my sawtooth ways, I’d call you my love, call it fate, call it luck, call it karma, an act of faith. Act the part, stay together, call it a day.”

Typical of the Amsterdam 4-piece, contemplative lyrics are paired with an up tempo arrangement. A warbling Harrison-esque guitar and a farfisa float above a bouncing rhythm section. It’s heartbreak you can’t help but tap your feet to.
