By the early 1970s the paranormal was in vogue. The Victorian fashion for Spiritualism, where séances were held to contact the dead, had quieted down since the early 20th century, but belief in ghosts remained strong. And still does to this day with nearly half of the population of the United States believing in ghosts.
Parapsychologists were beginning to ask whether some hauntings were caused not by spirits but by psychokinesis, the ability of the living mind to affect physical objects.
