Imagine this scenario:
You meet someone. The spark is instant. You check the astrological compatibility (Synastry).
The charts look perfect. Venus conjunct Mars. Sun trine Moon. The books say this is “ideal.”
But the reality is brutally different:
You are losing your mind with intensity, and they are… just chilling.
Why? Is astrology broken? Did you miscalculate the birth time?
No. The problem is fundamental. We have been taught to treat aspects like a “50/50 contract.” We assume that if Planet A touches Planet B, both people feel the same heat.
This is the Great Asymmetry. And traditional tools completely fail to show it.
As a developer building a next-gen astrology app, I faced this exact problem. I realized that existing calculators lie by oversimplifying. They show a list of connections but ignore the most critical factor: Hierarchy.
Here is the algorithm I developed to solve this, based on the principles of Meta-Scientific Astrology [MSA].
An aspect connects two planets, yes. But the impact of that connection depends entirely on the structural weight of those planets in each individual’s natal chart.
Not all planets are equal.
In one chart, Venus might be the King (conjunct the Sun).
In another chart, Mars might be a peasant (background, unaspected).
If the King meets the Peasant, the interaction is not equal.
Let’s dissect a classic Venus (You) ☌ Mars (Them) conjunction.
Scenario A: Your Perspective (High Weight)
Your Chart: Your Venus is conjunct your Ascendant or Sun. In [MSA], this makes it a Level 1 Planet (Core Modulator). Venus is your Identity.
The Impact: When their Mars touches your Venus, it touches your very core. You feel this interaction as fateful, identity-shaking, and unavoidable.
Scenario B: Their Perspective (Low Weight)
Their Chart: Their Mars is in a neutral house, making no major aspects to their Sun or Moon. It is a Level 3 Planet (Background). It is just a function they use for action.
The Impact: They feel a spark. It’s pleasant. But it doesn’t shake their world. To them, it’s just a nice interaction, not a destiny.
Result: The aspect is the same. The experience is radically different.
You are writing poetry. They are checking their phone.
Stop counting “good” and “bad” aspects. Instead, follow this hierarchical protocol:
Before judging a connection, ask: “Is this planet important to THEM?”
Is it conjunct their Sun, Moon, or Angles (Asc/MC)?
Is it part of a major natal configuration?
If YES → The impact will be profound.
If NO → The impact will be background noise.
Does the person already have this aspect in their natal chart?
If you activate their Venus-Saturn square (which they were born with), you are triggering their lifelong psychological script. They will react instantly and deeply.
If you activate an energy they don’t possess innately, they might not even recognize what is happening.
Another flaw in traditional analysis is the obsession with Trines and Sextiles. “We have so many flows!”
But here is the truth derived from physics: Only Cardinal Aspects (0°, 90°, 180°) create Dynamic Tension.
Trines (120°): This is the aspect of flow. It is like floating down a lazy river. It creates comfort, but it does not create the friction needed for obsession, passion, or change.
Squares (90°) & Oppositions (180°): This is the aspect of event. It forces action. It demands integration. That is where the “Obsession” and “Growth” live.
True compatibility is not the absence of tension. It is the presence of shared, meaningful tension.
Relationships are rarely symmetrical because our internal structures are unique. And that is okay. The goal of analysis is not to find a “perfect mirror,” but to understand the imbalance.
The Golden Rule of MSA Synastry:
A Square to a Core Planet (Level 1) creates a stronger bond than ten Trines to background planets.
Although this algorithm sounds logical, it is incredibly hard to calculate manually for every pair of charts. You have to hold two entire hierarchies in your head at once.
That is exactly why I built ALFI.
It is the first app designed to visualize these weights and asymmetries. It doesn’t just list aspects; it shows you who is feeling what.
Because in love, knowing the truth about the imbalance is the only way to find balance.
