My mother’s first shoes.
Found in a box in a Baggie in a drawer in her office. Leather and suede, with four tiny butttons to do up on each.
My mother’s first gloves.
Found in an old heart-shaped red box that once held Valentine candy. Tan, kid, and very very tiny. Also date from 1917. Peg would have been about a year old. I cannot imagine trying to stuff a one-year-old’s fingers into these and still thinking having a baby had been a good idea.
FINAL HOME: will frame rather cleverly; better yet, think about it for a few years but never get round to it.
My father’s first shoes.
Found in a box from Norway in the attic. Leather, lace-up.
FINAL HOME: my attic
My grandmother’s baby shoes and socks.
Black leather with laced bows; socks are wool. Both date from about 1889. Speaking as someone who is mystified by the word “flats” unless referring to a bunch of apartments, I was pleased to note that wearing heels from an early age clearly runs in the family.
FINAL HOME: Dodge County Historical Society, Mantorville, Minnesota
MY first shoes.
Yuk. I mean, who dressed me??
