A major eclipse is coming! This Wednesday, the first total solar eclipse in a long time is going to happen. This eclipse could have a major impact on your life and the world at large, so it's a good idea to be prepared. In this article, I'll explain what to expect from this significant solar event.
Solar eclipses always carry significant weight in astrology, but some stand out more clearly than others. On August 12, 2026, an especially noteworthy New Moon and total solar eclipse will occur. The New Moon will occur at 1:36 PM EDT (5:36 PM UTC), and the solar eclipse (maximum totality) will follow at 1:46 PM EDT (5:46 PM UTC). It’s important to understand that the effects of this eclipse will resonate throughout the month of August but also for many months before and after August.
This will be a very unique total solar eclipse for many reasons. In particular, it will be the first totality on Earth in the past 28 months, and the first one in Europe since 1999. The total solar eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain, and a small area within Portugal. Other areas in the northern hemisphere will experience a partial solar eclipse, such as in northern parts of the United States, most of Canada, much of Europe, and northwestern Africa. Some areas in Africa and Europe may also experience a sunset eclipse. In a total solar eclipse, the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely blocking the face of the Sun. This is known as totality. A solar eclipse is literally a super-charged New Moon representing significant endings and new beginnings. An eclipse, whether visible or not, affects the entire world. I like to envision it as an electromagnetic reset for our whole planet, similar to when we reboot a malfunctioning piece of electronic equipment and it starts working better than it did before.
The astrological effect of an eclipse is akin to shining a spotlight on a specific area of the zodiac and a precise section of an astrological birth chart. When an eclipse closely aspects planets and sensitive points in the horoscope of an individual, country, or other entity, the matters symbolized by those planets and chart points will be highlighted. Often, turning points are reached and new insights uncovered in the areas of life an eclipse touches.
A solar eclipse illuminates debilitating personal issues that must be brought to light and managed. The eclipse will be most impactful for those whose natal charts are directly aligned with the eclipse (especially those with the Sun in the same nakshatra as the eclipsed luminaries, which is Ashlesha nakshatra in this case). Some could experience stressful events, a drop in vitality, or other health concerns in the weeks or months around the eclipse, but the effects could be especially strong for several days before and after the eclipse.

In the Vedic tradition as well as some indigenous spiritual traditions, we are advised not to view an eclipse, as this can magnify negative energy and lead to mental or emotional agitation. Instead, we should turn within and meditate, pray, or chant during the time of maximum eclipse. At this time, the positive results of our spiritual efforts and intentions will be amplified immensely.
In addition to not looking directly at an eclipse, we should also avoid making significant life changes or important decisions in the days and even weeks around an eclipse. This is because the eclipse energy can have a destabilizing influence on our decision-making capability. In the case of a solar eclipse, Classical Muhurta states specifically that one should avoid initiating or deciding anything of material consequence for three days before, the day of, and three days after the eclipse.
The August 12 solar eclipse will occur with the Sun and Moon in Cancer and in Ashlesha nakshatra. The Sun and Moon will be in a wide conjunction with Mercury and Jupiter. They will be in Cancer in Pushya nakshatra. In addition, Ketu will be in Leo and Magha nakshatra. The presence of Jupiter and Mercury in the eclipse axis suggests some very positive qualities in this eclipse in addition to any challenges that may also be indicated.
The solar eclipse may have a major impact on world events. This eclipse covers Spain, and as is well-known now, Spain recently won the 2026 FIFA World Cup title. According to astrologer Celeste Teal in her book Eclipses: Predicting World Events and Personal Transformation, page 97: “An eclipse sometimes points to where you’ve been investing your energy for an extended time, and indicates the need to bring this out into the external world. In a way, an eclipse often brings a dream into a reality because you’ll work very hard to make it that way.” This may have played out when the Spanish team’s hard work led to their victory.
At the same time, the Ketu eclipse over Spain points to the recent migrant crisis in Ceuta as well as record wildfires. These kinds of issues are also happening in France which will witness a strong partial eclipse. See NASA maps of the eclipse below:
A Ketu solar eclipse generally suggests a time of shakeups, especially in the weeks before and after the eclipse. Ketu’s nature is very hot, volatile, disruptive, and intense. When Ketu is causing the eclipse, it often forces something that has been repressed to be exposed and hopefully transformed within ourselves, our lives, or in our world.
Ketu currently occupies Magha nakshatra, a transit which I previously discussed in my article titled The Great Unraveling. Ketu in Magha nakshatra points to the rebellion against traditional institutions and authorities along with the eruption of long-held historical and generational grievances. On the world stage, we may see this being acted out through dramatic events that include intensified culture wars, political polarization, moral panic, mass hysteria, and scapegoating behavior.
The eclipse occurring in Ashlesha nakshatra can further trigger the uprooting of psychological issues such as deeply held insecurities, fears, and resentments. An Ashlesha eclipse can activate inner transformation and major life changes for some, just like a serpent shedding its skin. This is a key analogy for Ashlesha nakshatra which is symbolized by a coiled snake and ruled by the elemental serpent deities known as the Nagas.
In the mundane sphere, an eclipse in the sign of Cancer can activate dangerous storms and floods, as well as transportation and maritime disasters. There may also be issues involving water supplies, land and real estate, crops and agriculture, the fishing industry, and food production and distribution.
With an eclipse occurring in Ashlesha nakshatra and in the Sarpa Drekkana (the area from 10-30 degrees of Cancer), we might also see issues related to international trade and business, as well as poisons and toxins. There could also be acute diseases related to the respiratory system or digestive system (like flu or parasites). The unusual cyclosporiasis outbreak in multiple states within the United States this summer would certainly support the astrological significations of the looming eclipse.
Finally, on a more positive note, this eclipse is in the Solar Saros 126 series of eclipses. According to astrologer Bernadette Brady, this cycle heralds the arrival of breakthroughs and solutions. As Brady describes, it is about “…breaking out of a negative situation in which a worry that may have been affecting a person will suddenly clear. The solution will be shown by the cosmos and needs to be taken up without too much delay.” (Predicting Astrology: The Eagle and the Lark, page 323).
As we move through the days surrounding this eclipse, the traditional guidance remains valuable: protect your energy, avoid major decisions when possible, and use the heightened period for inner work. Clarity can emerge once something ready for release has been cleared. Staying attentive to both practical needs and emerging insights will support a constructive journey through this cycle.
