This Monarch was so camouflaged in the gravel I nearly stepped on it. Still, limp, but not yet lifeless, I thought it might be nearing the end of its life. Bending down, I talked to him.
“Hello, beautiful. Are you alright? Would you like a lift?”
Holding my index finger out, I waited. He wobbled over to me and climbed aboard. He kept his wings folded tightly back at first, but after a minute of dancing across my knuckles, he opened them, and booty-shook his thorax, animation returning.
“You are perfect. You are amazing. Hello, hello. Thank you for visiting,” I whispered to him, still thinking he might be heading toward the rainbow bridge.
Then he sprung to my shirt, flapped his wings a few more times, and flew off into the trees.
Not dead. Not even dying, just then. Perhaps, simply craving some connection or a gentle place to warm up.
Take a moment to intentionally and patiently commune with nature. Have a conversation with the bees, or the trees, or a spider in the corner of your garden. What messages did you receive?
