How I support my energy and mood with a simple night routine.

This time of year, my energy is much lower— which means my evenings matter more. I’m not trying to optimize anything or overhaul my routine. I’m just paying attention to what helps me feel calm, rested, and like myself again.

I’ve learned that when I take care of how I end the day, everything feels a little easier. Over time, I’ve really noticed that it’s been the small habits (not the massive resets) that have made the biggest difference.

So I’m dedicating this month’s Paiges to the winter night routine I return to. It’s simple, flexible, and realistic. A handful of small habits and comforting products that help me wind down and feel gently put together, especially on nights I’m staying in.

The Routine

This isn’t a strict routine. It’s just the handful of things I come back to when winter feels heavy (or when life is… LIFE-ing), and my energy is low. Nothing rigid— just cues that help my body and brain understand it’s time to slow down.

Transitioning out of the day

I realized that I need a clear signal that the day is over. Otherwise, everything blurs together. Most nights, that looks like taking a shower— less about getting clean, more about telling my brain we’re entering the second part of the day. I’ll usually change the music, light a candle, and take Theo out for a walk around the block. Even five minutes outside helps me reset. It doesn’t have to be perfect— it just has to feel intentional!

Body care as a reset

Body care is one of the fastest ways I can shift my mood. Dry brushing before a shower wakes everything up in a grounding way, and lotion after feels like self care (even if it takes 20 seconds). In winter, I usually reach for warming scents, like my favorite vanilla scented lotion.

Feeling polished, just for myself

Even when I’m staying in, I like to feel a little put together. Matching pajamas make a bigger difference than they seem like they would. A few years ago, my new years resolution was to only wear matching PJs and it stuck— I wake up feeling more put together! Linking the newest pair I picked up here (they’re so cozy and 60% off right now: top and bottom)

Cooking for myself

Cooking for one still matters to me. Even on simple nights, making something warm and nourishing feels really grounding— like a small act of care I’m doing just for myself. I’ll share the recipe I’ve been loving lately, but more than anything, it’s the act of slowing down and feeding myself something nourishing that makes a difference. This carrot salad and miso butter chicken has been on repeat:

Ingredients for salad

4–5 medium carrots, peeled into ribbons

1 green onion, thinly sliced

½ cup pickled turnips (optional)

¼ cup fresh basil, thinly sliced

1 tbsp sesame seeds

Dressing:

2 tbsp rice vinegar

Juice of ½ lime

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp honey

1 garlic clove, minced

Pinch of salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Using a vegetable peeler, shave the carrots into long ribbons and place in a bowl.

  2. Add the green onion, pickled turnips (if using), basil, and sesame seeds.

  3. Whisk together the rice vinegar, lime juice, soy sauce, olive oil, honey, garlic, and salt.

  4. Pour over the salad and toss well to coat.

Ingredients for chicken

1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts

4 tbsp butter, softened

⅓ cup white miso

2 tbsp honey

1 tbsp rice vinegar

1–2 garlic cloves, minced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly pat chicken dry.

  2. In a bowl, mix together softened butter, miso, honey, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger.

  3. Place chicken in a baking dish and spread the miso butter generously over the top and sides.

  4. Bake for 22–28 minutes, depending on thickness, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

  5. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Spoon any melted miso butter from the pan over the top.

Setting the tone for sleep

And finally before bed, I try to keep things calm and uncomplicated. Lights low, phone down (I read my Kindle on the warmest mode possible!), and a final candle lit (this is my current go-to candle as we inch towards Spring). I’ll stretch a little, apply lip balm and hand cream, and let the day fully end. While I do track my sleep with my Oura ring, the goal isn’t perfect sleep— it’s creating an environment that makes rest feel possible and easy. I always wake up feeling refreshed and productive when I take the time to wind down like this. Hope this helps and as always, let me know if you have any questions! xx Ash
