Study: Craggy Dam's removal from the French Broad River could lower flooding risks, improve water quality and encourage more kayaking

Removing Craggy Dam, an aging hydroelectric dam along the French Broad River in Woodfin, would reduce flooding risks, open up a section of the river to boaters and kayakers, improve water quality and benefit native fish species, according to a new report.

The study arrives as Buncombe County’s Metropolitan Sewerage District considers moving ahead this spring with repairs to its hydropower system, which supplies a portion of the electricity required to operate its wastewater treatment plant. Advocates for Craggy Dam’s removal want Metropolitan Sewerage District officials to have a full and open discussion about Craggy Dam’s future before committing to an estimated $3 million in needed repairs to the dam infrastructure.
