There are two corrections from my last Hot Sheet round-up. First, a photo caption incorrectly identified the new Thunder Burgerz location in West Asheville. The new location is the old Taco Boy restaurant on Haywood Road. Second, my update about Gourmand Asheville’s new rotisserie chicken eatery created unnecessary confusion. Their new location is coming together next door to Reed Creek Greenway Apartments.
Now for more of what’s going around…
The long-running Funk Jam has returned following a Helene-induced hiatus, and the popular weekly live musical event has a new home and a new day of the week. For the past 18 years, the event, also known as the Tuesday Night Funk Jam, has had a couple of different homes, but had been based at Asheville Music Hall since 2012. Now the venerable Barley’s restaurant/bar/live music venue downtown is home to Thursday Night Funk. Local host and music scene stalwart Josh Blake tells me he’s excited to have the open jam session back. He adds that Barley’s is a great new home for TNF. Over the years, the jam sessions have attracted many local musicians, as well as nationally touring artists such as Galactic, Budos Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, members of Parliament-Funkadelic and many more.
Sisu Bread plans to open a brick-and-mortar shop at 1463 Smokey Park Highway in Candler. From the Sisu website: “Sisu Bread is a traditional style bakery that uses multi-cultural methods with a blend of modern and old techniques that produces wonderful artisan breads and pastries. Matthew Sundqvist, owner and baker, has a Scandinavian background with over 25 years of experience working in French, German and Italian bakeries.” The plan is to open on Sept. 2, with the bakery open Wednesdays through Sundays.
Momento House Cafe has opened in a shopping center at 145 Charlotte Highway in Fairview.
AF International Market is coming to 1487 Charlotte Highway in Fairview. “We’re more than just a grocery store; we’re a place where families, friends and neighbors can discover authentic flavors from around the world,” according to the market’s FB page.
The Fairview Town Crier is one of my favorite community newspapers. (And yes, they still print a robust newspaper one a month!) In a front page story, the newspaper’s Lisa Witler writes that the Town Crier is planning to launch a series of events aimed at “creating or supporting more opportunities for neighbors to gather, connect and celebrate Fairview.” Awesome!
A cigar shop that’s an Asheville institution is moving across town, and two new bars are in the works. Check it out:
The Asheville Museum of Science plans to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a big fund-raising party later this year. Museum officials are still listening to feedback from patrons regarding ideas about possible exhibits, amenities and improvements as the museum eyes expansion.
Silver Mountain Coin & Jewelry is open in the shopping center at 891 Patton Ave. that’s home to several restaurants and shops, including El Que Pasa and a car rental agency.
There are two new River Arts District festivals coming later this year.
RADishFest, set for Sept. 12, is “a local initiative created to help expose folks to new local musicians and artist in the River Arts District with a focus on immersive art experiences, storytelling and community,” writes Rob Czar in an email to me. Czar is a contemporary mixed-media artist, art gallery owner and a co-creator of the popular DIY YouTube channel Thread Banger. Czar says he’s looking for sponsors and help in getting word out about RADishFest in the hope that it will become a signature community event.
Foundy Fest, scheduled for Oct. 3, is billed as a one-day takeover at The Foundy that’s “dedicated to the grit and craftsmanship of Appalachian arts and music.” The event is produced by Leona Wild Collective, “a women-led, sustainable and community driven” organization in Asheville. The Foundy, or Foundation, is a collection of local businesses, which includes Wedge Brewing, Marquee, Cultivated Climbing, The Foundation DIY skatepark and others, on Old Lyman Street. The area was heavily damaged by flooding in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene almost two years ago.
