Buying USAID flags for your members of Congress is like writing them a letter they will see every day.

We’ll let your members know the flags are from you. You can specify who you want us to give your flags to on our donation form.

I want to tell the story of how USAID Flag Day came about - because we didn’t plan it. It planned itself.

Every day this summer, about 20 of our interns have been working out of the Capitol cafeteria. If you’ve walked through Longworth recently, you’ve seen them. They sit at a long stretch of tables covered in USAID flags, prepping for Hill meetings, making calls, and talking to anyone who stops by.

And people stop by. A lot of people. Members walking through with their aides. Former USAID employees who now work on the Hill. A staffer who grew up in Ukraine and was educated because of USAID.

A few weeks ago, staffers started asking a question we hadn’t prepared for: can I have one of those flags?

The first time, we said we’d look into it. The fifth time, we started keeping a list. By the time the list had a few dozen names on it, the answer was obvious: don’t just give flags to the staffers who ask, give them to everyone.

Buy a Flag

That’s Flag Day. On July 21, we’re distributing 1,000 USAID flags across the Hill, to Members and staff in both parties. On one of our recent posts, someone commented, “Members have budgets and should buy their own flags if they really support USAID.” Fair point, and honestly, some of them have! But this isn’t about saving Members $8. It’s about a coordinated, visible moment where hundreds of offices receive the same flag on the same day, and about the conversations our volunteers will have at every handoff.

Here’s how you can be part of it:

Sponsor a flag. $8 puts one flag in a congressional office. Our goal is 1,000 flags.

Buy a Flag

Come hand them out. We’ll be in the Longworth Cafeteria at 11 am on July 21. Every volunteer who joins us gets a flag to take home.
