Hi friend!
Can I be honest? The holiday pressure was already creeping in… until my kids reminded me of something I’d forgotten.
Last week, I sat down expecting a simple Bible memory moment with my kids… and instead they started listing the times God saved our lives. I was not ready for that.
I had just read aloud:
“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His love endures forever!”
Psalm 136:1 NIV
And:
“Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts!”
Psalm 105:2 NIV
Then I asked them: “What are some of your favorite marvelous deeds that God has done—either in biblical history or in our family’s story?”
I expected the typical Sunday School answers—parting the Red Sea, Jesus rising from the dead—and those definitely made their list.
What I didn’t expect was how quickly personal stories came pouring out:
“That time when you were nearly forcefully taken from your mom and put up for adoption as a newborn baby in Greece, but God protected you.”
“That time when I was a baby and almost died in the hospital, but God healed me.”
“That time I nearly fell off the side of a cliff on our Southwest trip, but God got me safely to the ground.”
Be still my heart. I wasn’t expecting that depth from the get-go! I was even more surprised by how quickly the stories rolled off their lips.

This is something we regularly practice in our home: we narrate God’s faithfulness in our everyday lives—so the next generation knows that God still works miracles in our world today:
“One generation commends your works to another;
they tell of your mighty acts.”

I know we’re past Thanksgiving, and today is Cyber Monday. We’re officially in Advent now (and we’ve got some Christmas shopping goods for you below). But before we rush ahead, might we let gratitude linger a little longer?

Let’s think about not just generic gratitude, but moments we can point to and say:
“Here is where You, Man of Sorrows, comforted me in my sorrow.” (For me, that’s just this week, as my last living grandparents passed into the arms of Jesus.)
“Here is where You, Lion of Judah, roared Your protection over me.” (For me? I taught our middle schoolers about the Lion of Judah last Sunday, and was reminded again of Jesus’ power protecting His little ones.)
“Here is where You, Word of God, spoke with power over me.” (For me, that was just last month, celebrating YouVersion’s one-billion-download milestone—worshiping the Word made flesh as we celebrated His word in our hands—felt like a taste of heaven.)
My children helped me remember the goodness and presence of Jesus even during a difficult week of loss.
What names of Jesus would you use to narrate your walk with Him in 2025? Has He been your Light in the darkness? Your Good Shepherd? Your Bread of Life?
