I was fortunate to meet at a rule of law workshop a few months ago and immediately asked her to be a guest for my Substack series. Liz was the Justice Department’s pardon attorney and one of the first casualties of Trump 2.0. In March 2025, Liz was fired from her position for raising concerns about a recommendation to restore actor Mel Gibson’s gun rights, which were removed following a domestic violence conviction. What followed was a series of escalating retaliatory actions against Liz and her family. I hope you will join us today to talk about how Liz navigated this experience with courage and poise — I remember watching her on TV at the time and admiring her refusal to stay silent. We’ll also talk about the proper role of the pardon attorney, what it means that gatekeepers like her no longer exist, and how the Justice Department will need to rebuild after this national nightmare is over.
