One of the books that I keep returning to again and again in my research is journalist Tom Mueller’s Crisis of Conscience: Whistleblowing in an Age of Fraud. Apart from being a fantastic writer, Mueller has chronicled a dizzying number of case studies of corruption and wrongdoing, and delves into the whistleblowers who exposed them. (I would have made this book a Book Club selection except that it is super long and the print is so tiny it could cause personal injury — but I do recommend it, and you can listen to it on audio!). Seeing so many whistleblowers across so many contexts really begins to give you a sense for what makes them outliers. It also makes you see that the patterns of retaliation are, at this point, textbook…which raises the question: Why is it in our nature to disbelieve and turn on whistleblowers?
