Tell me about yourself?
I’m a filmmaker based in Brooklyn and one of Asano’s earliest and most passionate devotees. When I’m not huddled in a writing dungeon I love to be on set, in a theater, or running very slowly in Prospect Park. I have an oat hot chocolate almost every day of my life. I work with all sorts of companies and individuals on all sorts of video projects around the city, and I’m currently getting ready to make my first feature. It’s about a singer-songwriter in New York City with a full score of original music and a big ensemble cast and everyone falls in love with the wrong person.
What gets you up in the morning?
The mornings are my alone time. Cherished and protected. I sit at my little table and I light my little candle, put on music, write in my journal. Make it romantic. Even if I can only steal a few minutes before the chaos begins, it’s meaningful. On good days, my phone stays face down on the couch where it went to bed the night before, and original thoughts have a chance to pay a visit. And everything is possible.
What’s something about your work that people don’t see, but should know?
When it comes to writing a movie or editing a movie, there is just so much time…. So much time… Spent on a computer, alone in a room, wondering if this idea will ever have meaning for anyone but you.
Best meal you’ve had recently?
Not to be gay but my girlfriend, Austen, is an incredible cook. This is some sort of garlic bread sun-dried tomato situation she made us in Greece, it was a masterpiece made up of scraps from the kitchen. Any time she sticks her head in the fridge and says “hmmmm,” something very exciting is about to happen.
If you could have coffee with anyone, dead or alive?
Toni Morrison? Steven Spielberg? Joan of Arc? I’d love to sit across from them with my oat hot chocolate and ask, “How did you do that?”
What does your craft mean to you in one sentence?
The pursuit of something bigger and more beautiful than what you already know…
